Black Star House Academy (BSHA)

The goal of the Black Star House Academy (BSHA) program is to improve academic performance and high school graduation rates of children from Ghanaian families. The program aims to strengthen the math, science and English language skills of children and youth in Ghanaian immigrant families in New Castle County. The program will provides homework assistance one night during the week and a two-hour Saturday morning academy in which instructors review with the students what they studied during the week and provide tutoring assistance in areas in which they are experiencing difficulties. The program provides space for and builds on their social and cultural heritage as a protective barrier against anti-social behavior. Because parental involvement is a strong predictor of academic success, the program encourages and facilitates parental engagement in the educational process of the children of the Ghanaian community, through workshops on parental engagement and strategies for working with schools.

The BSHA program will have three broad goals:

1. Encourage and facilitate academic excellence among children of the Ghanaian immigrant community, through:

  • Homework assistance
  • Study groups
  • Subject classes (Computer, Mathematics, English,..etc)
  • Enrichment programs

2. Foster spiritual growth, social, cultural and academic interaction among children of the Ghanaian immigrant community, through:

  • Christian Education
  • Social and cultural activities
  • Games and sports
  • Educational outings

3. Encourage and facilitate parental engagement in the educational process of the children of the African immigrant community, through:

  • Workshops on parental engagement
  • Strategies for working with schools
  • Games and sports
  • Workshops on active parenting
